When I'm asked why a newsroom with a focus on harm reduction talks so much about food and eating, I remember that the culture around food that we see online is one of luxury. It's a culture of new restaurants and of the current place to be. There's not nearly enough talking about where our food comes from, who helps it get from the ground to the plate, and who gets access to quality meals.
Being well fed, as part of being healthy, helps you make better decisions and empower your community. And even though we have an abundance of great cuisine in this country, there are still people who do not have access to enough food daily to help them thrive in life.
Before we narrow down to those systems, let's understand what we can do at surface level to help change this. See the video below for thoughts on shopping in your own zip code, keeping an eye on neighbors who visit community fridges and buying from small businesses, all in an effort to build a robust food resource in your own community.
