It's a hidden fact (more popular by the day) that you can volunteer at the Philadelphia Flower Show and get free admission. I've volunteered at three separate shows, and saw drastically different exhibits each time. It's become something I look forward to and even plan in advance.

Some quick facts:

  • You can sign up in advance to receive volunteer information at PHSonline.org. Looking at the volunteer hub, I can see there are still shifts open at the flower show right now.
  • Each shift is about three hours long, and divided into departments. You could be helping with the horticulture, standing at an information booth, or acting as an ambassador when people enter the Convention Center.
  • You must stay at your post for the duration of your shift, so PHS gives us water bottles and an orientation prior to start time. Via email you'll also receive a map and tips sheet weeks ahead of time.
  • One shift volunteer session entitles you to free entry the day of your shift. Two shifts entitles you to a ticket. More shifts grants you a guest ticket as well.
  • Because I take being a show ambassador a little too seriously, I use my free entry to see the show prior to my scheduled start time so that I can suggest exhibits and vendors to guests.

Most of the volunteers are PHS regulars who give their time every year and have a regular post. Their knowledge is paramount to knowing the tips and tricks. But the best part of this volunteer opportunity is seeing smiling faces exit the show hall after seeing the exhibits you recommended.

What are some of the top questions I get from guests at the show? There are always a handful that stand out so I compiled them into a video.
